The Grim Sleeper - Some Interesting Thoughts

This is a reply to one of our previous Grim Sleeper blog entries. We’ve pasted it below as it is quite a thought (and hopefully discussion ) provoking comment:

A comment from a Grim Sleeper blog reader ‘Jack’

Some personal gut feelings:

The Grim-Sleeper doesn’t live in the South Central area. Not anymore. He spent his youth there, teens, maybe twenties. Has a few associates, knows his way around, but that world is not one he frequents.

My guess is, he’s from the NW Inglewood area. More affluent, better educated. I’m thinking Ladera Heights, Fox Hills, maybe more southern…Lennox, Hawthorne. When he wants to play he goes back to his old stomping ground. That’s why most people don’t remember his car.

Think about it….A car like that? In South Central? Late 80’s.

Crack-Heads would’a stripped it dry before his key left the lock.

Also, he wasn’t in jail. He screwed the pooch on that last diddy and he’s thinking, “FUCK! She’s alive. She saw my face. Did she get my license? Does she remember where we stopped?”

And so he goes quiet, ’cause he fucked up really bad and he’s not dumb. He stays away from Western and ditches his .25 pea-shooter.

The 14 year-old, Princess, is interesting. She resurrects him. Where did she go to school? Who was her case-worker? Who picked up the phone when the foster parents call and say, “She ran away again”. Did he fancy her photo from some file? Did he ever interview her? Keep tabs on her?

Who did she roll with on the street? Someone had her back……until they didn’t…

Maybe he gets word she’s hit the streets, and goddamn it if she ain’t runnin’ around his old neighborhood. He goes out, catches word of where she’s hangin’, thinks if anybody asks I’m just pickin’ her up and returning her to foster care.

He gets her in the car…..Says we’re gonna have a little talk….drives somewhere quiet…and the beast is back.

Pretty fuckin’ thin….

Other random thoughts:

The 911 Caller - Was it him? Guy sounds articulate. Cool. Calm. He has all that information - exact address, license plate, make, model, color, calls it a murder, male suspect……but HE DIDN’T SEE THE GUY? I mean, Jesus Christ, that’s a PERFECT description….except for the guy.

Was he trying to throw the cops off? Or I could be wrong. If the cops pulled some evidence from the van—like a print—and matched it to a later crime scene, then the caller was probably legit.

Also, the last three victims were all killed ON or within a WEEK of a major holiday. Christmas time-Princess…..Post July 4th-McCorvey…..New Years Eve-Peters.

You kill this Janecia on New Years Eve and your family doesn’t know you’re missing? Is this guy a loner? What’s a 50 year-old doing hanging out with a 25 year-old stranger on New Years. And he obviously had her at a quiet place ’cause she was found naked, in a black trash bag….so the crime scene is….elsewhere.

And this Orange Pinto. Are we sure it was a Ford Pinto? Or was it a Datsun? Or something similiar. One thing’s for sure, he drove it for atleast a year. A neighbor spotted Mary Lowe getting into it in Oct.1987 and then his surviving victim described it in Nov.1988.

And it was his baby. His flare for some color and flash. Finding that car would be a huge break. But maybe he ditched it after the botched murder…

…all I know is I saw an Old-Ass but well-kept orange Datsun at 6231 S. Halm Avenue…License Plate 288-NDW or NOW or NQW.

…I was too much of a pussy to go in the guy’s driveway. Also, there are multiple old, well-kept cars, small and covered on Shenandoah Avenue, nearby. I wanted to take a peak under their covers because come of them look like the same size/shape of a Pinto.

I’ll keep my eyes peeled….YOU should TOO.

Lastly, this guy has balls. I drove down Western today, around some of the murder sights, and let me tell you, my pasty white Irish-ass hasn’t gotten that many double-takes since living in Mexico. It is black. And it is hard.

-And I’ve been to some pretty hairy place in my life. But this neighborhood is tough and it will be hard to crack. This guy definitely at one time, lived there.

Good luck, everyone.

Keep your ears and eyes open. Somewhere, some guy has an old Polaroid of a serial-killer standing next to his eye-sore Orange Pinto, waving, wearing a big shit-eating grin……And that holds the key…

Nioe thinking, Jack. It’s very likely that TGS lives in South L.A. or any of the surrounding areas (including Inglewood or Hawthorne). What will probably make this case most difficult to crack is that TGS looks, acts and behaves “Normal” in everyday life and his family (probably) has no idea of his other side. As for your comments regarding how rough and crime-ridden the neighborhoods in which these crimes ocurred are I can assure you they were MUCH WORSE during the 1980s than they are today. I’d also like to point out that if the survivor’s (Enietra Margette) description of the Pinto is correct it would have been an attention-getter but …when Sam Cooke was murdered in Watts well over 20 years earlier he (Cooke) was driving a late-model Ferrari and it was not stolen from the motel’s parking lot!!! Unfortunately, the LAPD won’t release any kind of bio on the victims but it seems that most of the victims were involved in street prostitution and had drug-related problems. As for the anonymous 911 caller, I (honestly) also feel he is the Grim Sleeper himself.

not sure if its 100 percent right, however what you said does make some connection… and okay amount of thinking. after reading all the infos here… i was thinking if the LAPD ever investigate on the victim’s personalities… grim sleeper not only target these women who are “prositutes..” and “drug users’ or “poor”. no matter who they are and does those 3 that mention, personalities are different from each and anyone.
do you find any info on that?

I agree about the pinto, Ive seen some orange datsun that made me think of the same thing. Its wierd that this guy is still out here. Some of them I have taken down the license plate.

Thought this one was interesting also…

I wonder what the laws are for getting DNA from Everyone with a criminal history are…? How long it will take the cops to consider DNA as basic a need as getting fingerprints. If you go to jail for ANY reason #1 they should have your fingerprints put in the computer. #2 they should have your DNA on file and in the System. #3 Criminal should have to pay for all of the related costs (not just on a state by state rule, rather should be national level or no release/parole). Knowing your DNA is in the System should be a deterrent.

I think the key is the lone survivor…talking with her more…trying to get more details (like a sketch of the killer’s face and also of the car)..(I agree with your statement..”old Polaroid of a serial-killer standing next to his eye-sore Orange Pinto, waving, wearing a big shit-eating grin……And that holds the key”). so… get this website to accept donations…use that money to hire a sketch artist and chat with the survivor…then post up a billboard with this and a tip line (then when you catch him, give the $500K reward to the families of the victims and the lone survivor). They can catch this guy, but will need to check a lot more DNA (or get more DNA in their computer system). or they need to find someone who went to that church or who remembers his car…(maybe that billboard with car/face sketch would do the trick). This was interesting. http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/57661132.html

..so in the WI case they have DNA on all felons since the year 2000, but were missing 12,000 files somehow. They also did a duplicate check to see if 2 different felons had the same DNA (indicates an error, or someone who gave their DNA to help hide someone else) and was the case for Walter Ellis. You can see that anyone with a duplicate DNA would be covering for someone who needed covering…

It would be interesting to see how many thousand DNA samples are also missing from LA’s Database.

You ought to write for the LAweekly.

yeah,I bet if you see car like that, must drive you crazy, thinking GS!

But it is impossible for him to be living here,he knows already that they are after his ass. so he must be doing his killing out of state.

    think about that people!
    like that dude,in NC.

“JACK” i agree with some points however it is very strange although he left DNA at the scene of one of his victims as stated on the net, but he is not in the DNA database tells me the killer could well be like ted bundy in the fact he is charming smart hansome man which no one would have thought could be a killer this could be why he uses ladies of the night as he could be a buinessman who comes and goes from the area, i disagree the going missing is due to the women seeing him serial killers think they are invinable after a few kills so i dought this would have stopped him. abd finally surley its time for the BAU TO GET INVOLVED? i firmly belive the killer does not live in the area but does drift in and out.

    p.s
if you look at the killer planting a note in the victims forhead saying “slut” the victim was a lady of the night. Did the killer once use one and fail to rise to the occation? or was his mum a lady of the night or abuse him? sorry just a few points

  • 9 Justin Says:

Mark (#8): The napkin found on victim #7’s forehead said “AIDS” but not “Slut”. In light of this, it’s rather likely that The Grim Sleeper probably knew her personally or at least knew (or thought) she was a “lady of the night”. It’s also ironic that The Grim Sleeper’s only known survivor was mistaken for a local prostitute who had the same body type (and other physical features) as the survivor. It’s true that the Grim Sleeper DOES seem to have an encyclopedic knowledge of South-Central L.A.’s geography (including the back alleys’ locations) and he most likely grew up and/or lived in the area for many years but he slipped up once and is not perfect.

It’s true that when the average person thinks of a serial killer we think of a phantom who lives in shadows and only comes out at night but in reality this killer does everything that we do each and everyday. He has a barber that cut his hair. A banker that sees him weekly at the bank. He shops for food at the local grocery store. Somebody knows this guy and may have thought to themselves something is odd about him. He is out there and I hope they catch him and soon.
